On 22 January 2026, an important session was held within the scope of the Project and Finance Congress hosted by the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (UMT), with the aim of enhancing municipalities’ project development capacity and introducing national and international financing opportunities.
Within the framework of the congress, Mr. Mehmet Yunus İnan, Head of the Project Preparation and Monitoring Department of the Directorate General for European Union and Foreign Relations of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, delivered a presentation entitled “European Union Grants for Local Governments.” In his presentation, the financial cooperation process between the European Union and Türkiye was addressed within a historical framework, and the projects and investments implemented in the fields of environment, climate and municipal infrastructure throughout the IPA I, IPA II and IPA III periods were explained in detail.
In his presentation, Mr. İnan shared up-to-date information with participants on IPA funds, Horizon Europe and other national and international financing instruments that municipalities can benefit from in the areas of water and wastewater, solid waste management, combating climate change and green transformation. He also provided information on the Technical Assistance Project Supporting Post-Earthquake Recovery in the Municipal Infrastructure Sector.
Throughout the congress, comprehensive presentations were also delivered by other institutions to contribute to the production of higher-quality projects by local governments in line with sustainable development goals. Information on the Horizon Europe Programme implemented by TÜBİTAK, as well as various domestic and international financing instruments, was shared with participants.
The programme served as an important platform for knowledge sharing in terms of enabling municipalities to benefit more effectively from international funds, strengthening their project preparation and implementation capacities, and disseminating good practice examples.
