ABOUT THE PROJECT	Through this project, a water quality ecological assessment system specific to Türkiye and aligned with the EU Water Framework Directive will be established on the basis of ecoregions reflecting Türkiye’s diverse geographical, climatic and ecological characteristics. Within the scope of the project: Biological and hydromorphological indices appropriate to Türkiye’s conditions will be developed. Ecoregion-based reference conditions and reference sites for each water body type will be identified in terms of biological quality elements. These reference sites will also serve as a basis for protected area studies. For the first time in Türkiye, the effects of climate change on aquatic ecosystems, water quality and the ecological assessment system will be addressed in a holistic manner. Institutional capacity will be strengthened. Public awareness on water quality will be raised through public service announcements and documentaries.
